My grandmother had her daughter and son-in-law and children living with her and they tried to help her watch her diet. She had a fluid problem and her feet would sometimes swell and her ankles would go over her shoes. As a kid I thought that this was because she was heavy, because I didn't know about her heart condition.
She had two large pecan trees between her house and her daughter's house and whenever we would go and visit her we always ended up playing on these trees. She also had large shrubs going around her empty corner lot where we played softball, kickball and hiding seek.
When fall would come and the pecans started to fall grandmother knew just how to get her some pecans brought into the house for her. She would give us kids a quarter to go out and get her some pecans and crack them and bring them back in for her to eat. She loved salt which wasn't on her diet. When we brought in the cracked pecans she would get us to get out her hidden salt shaker in her cedar chest so she could eat them.
The subject never came up about the pecans with our parents or family members and we were tickled to have made a quarter for just a little work.
