She was the next to the youngest in a large family of mostly girls. She
followed family tradition and married a cousin at the age of 16. A
little more than ten years later, at the age of 27, she was widowed by
the war and left with four young children; Elizabeth (age 9), Hollie
(age 7), William, and Susan (age 5 months).
The location of the
final resting place of her father, William Carter, has been lost in
time. He may be buried in an unmarked grave near Sarah and her mother
